How has blogging and reviewing changed your reading habits? Do you read a genre now that you wouldn’t have tried prior? Or have you been turned off by a genre you used to love?
Blogging hasn’t really influenced or changed my reading habits at all. If you’d asked me last year, I would have said ‘I don’t re-read things! I only look for new content!’ but that’s no longer true, because I started Project Animorphs, which is a year-long re-read of my favourite childhood series.
I read what I want to read. The only thing I’d say is that I review absolutely everything I finish. I don’t write reviews for books I don’t manage to finish – at the moment – because too many people get their panties in a knot over it. I might say why I’m unable to finish it, but it won’t be a review and it won’t get a rating. But whatever, I know some people review books they don’t finish, and I’m absolutely fine with that.
I pretty much stick to the genres I know and love. I’m always looking for another 5 star read, that elusive book high that only really happens to me once a year. I know which genres I adore and which ones I’m not interested in, and I tend to stick to them because that’s what I like to read.
I think I haven’t so much been turned off a genre since I started blogging, but I have become hyper-aware of all of the fallacies of the genre. For example, I like paranormal romance in my YA, but it’s hard to find one I rate 5 stars. I’m aware that as a genre it has its weaknesses, and I tend not to like to read about those weaknesses. I guess I’m more aware of what I’m reading, since I started blogging.
I read what I want to read, but sometimes I see something reviewed favorably on lots of other blogs and I just have to try it!
When you do that, does it ever feel like you’re only adding to the noise? I hear some people complaining that YA book bloggers tend to all review the same books. To me it sounds like a marketing complaint, not from someone genuinely wanting to know the reviewer’s opinion.
EEPS! Animorphs! I adored that series when I was younger. I’m actually the opposite, since I started blogging I haven’t reread any of my favorites but I am going to try this year as a goal.
I agree, blogging does make you more aware of what your reading.

I want to re-read a few childhood faves too. But I read so slow as it is and I don’t want my blogging books to suffer.
I understand – my time is so limited that I’ve figured out exactly when I need to review each book. it doesn’t leave much time for new material this year but oh well.
